A measure sponsored by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, to improve drought and flood management of the Mississippi River received approval in the U.S. Senate. The proposal would authorize a study of the functioning of the Mississippi River Basin and determine best management practices for navigation and the protection of lives and property. The measure is one component of the Water Resources Development Act of 2013 and will head to the U.S. House for consideration. Belleville News-Democrat (Ill.), May 15, 2013
