Drought affecting clover and buckwheat crops; beekeepers expect smaller honey extraction in Craven County, North Carolina

CATEGORIES:
Agriculture
AFFECTED AREAS:
Craven County, NC

Start Date: 5/7/2013 - End Date: 5/17/2013
We are beekeepers. Drought is affecting planted crops (clover and buckwheat), which are drying up. The recent unusually late cold and wind kept the bees from foraging when the spring honey-flow plants were more abundant. Now it is heating up and the planted crops are failing due to lack of rain. We are also spending financially to run pumps and water. Additionally we have had to feed our bees as they consumed all of their stores as they built up their brood. Swarms became more of a problem later in the season than normal too. We will have a much delayed, if not minimal, honey extraction this year. We have a small operation, so the dollar figures aren't seemingly very high. CoCoRaHS Report from Station #New Bern 8.8 W on 5/17/2013
