Water prices rising in Fresno County, California

AFFECTED AREAS:
Fresno County, CA

Start Date: 3/20/2014 - End Date: 4/20/2014
Water prices were skyrocketing by the week as one Fresno County grower discovered after selling extra water for $1,500 an acre-foot about a month ago. Very recently someone offered him $2,500 per acre-foot. The arrival of investors, who grow crops requiring more water, were driving up water prices as supply decreases, which is threatening the survival of long term resident farmers growing traditional crops. The resident farmers cannot afford high priced water. The New York Times, April 20, 2014
