Laboratory tests confirmed that avian botulism killed dozens of ducks in several drought-depleted lakes in Reno, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Reno Gazette-Journal (Nev.), Sept. 8, 2014 Water quality has deteriorated at two Reno city parks, where lakes have not received water from the Truckee River since early August. That's when the river fell below the level of diversion outlets that direct water to Reno’s parks, stopping all water flow to the lakes. With no fresh water coming in, water quality is worsening. Twenty-four ducks were found dead at Virginia Lake and about the same number at Teglia’s Paradise Park. Avian botulism is the likely culprit, but lab results have not yet verified that suspicion.
