Animal researchers and climate scientists at Oklahoma State University received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help the cattle industry better cope with drought. The researchers were teaming up with the Oklahoma Mesonet weather network to examine water consumption by cattle and devise tools to inform ranchers about climate influences on cattle. Some cattle breeds require less feed and water and would be better suited to Oklahoma than other breeds. Many ranchers in the southwestern part of the state have had to cull their herds deeply over the past three years. Salina Journal & Salina.com (Kan.), Dec. 18, 2014
