Surface water supplies were scarce in eastern Massachusetts, leading wildlife to congregate around the remaining ponds. Seeds in dry soil did not germinate, while farmers with irrigation were using it to the fullest extent, but could not keep all crops watered. A nursery in Cohasset was selling plants at half price because their irrigation ponds had dried up.
