CATEGORIES:

AFFECTED AREAS:
Bartow County, GA

Start Date: 9/1/2016 - End Date: 11/11/2016
In addition to the infrequency of rainfall this summer and below-normal precipitation, we also had relentless heat waves. The average daily maximum temperature for June, July, August, and September was 90F degrees in Dallas, and 92F degrees in Calhoun and Rome. What little precipitation we did receive during this summer quickly evaporated and limited the yield potential of our forages in pastures and hayfields. Therefore, most hay producers that got a second cutting of hay saw below-normal yields. We estimate the average hay loss to be around 53% and the average grazing loss to be around 61% this fall. Most livestock producers have been culling cows and feeding hay during most of the fall, quickly depleting hay stocks in our region.
