The USDA expanded emergency grazing on land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program, authorizing grazing in the Dakotas and Montana in any county whose border lies within 150 miles of a county in severe drought. The Bismarck Tribune (N.D.), June 29, 2017 U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue authorized emergency grazing on Conservation Reserve Program land in the Dakotas and Montana as drought limited forage options. The emergency grazing may begin immediately and continue through Sept. 30 unless conditions improve. The authorization is for areas in extreme drought; areas in severe drought do not become eligible until drought has persisted for eight weeks. Great Falls Tribune (Mont.), June 23, 2017
