Foreseeing an early start to the fire season, the U.S. Forest Service called up fire crews two to three weeks ahead of schedule for the spring fire season. Hot shot crews and firefighting aircraft were also asked to arrive early, according to Bill King, a fire management officer for the Santa Fe and Carson national forests. The Carson hot shot crew begins work on March 18, while the Santa Fe crew starts on April 1. A small, water-dropping helicopter will be on hand on April 1, one month ahead of schedule.
