Wildfire activity above normal in New Mexico

State and federal land managers warned New Mexicans that this may be a very severe fire season. Already more than 140 fires have burned roughly 50 square miles of state and private land since the start of the year, nearly as much as burned in 2017.

Wildfire activity in New Mexico has been above normal since the start of the year with New Mexico State Forestry battling 108 fires that burned thousands of acres of state and private land. In comparison, just 76 fires were reported during the same time frame in 2017.
