Cattle not gaining weight; fruit smaller than normal in Platte County, Missouri

CATEGORIES:

AFFECTED AREAS:
Platte County, MO

Start Date: 8/14/2018 - End Date: 8/14/2018
even with showers falling, the soil is very very dry. It will take a couple rain events of over 2 inches to bring things back into growth mode. Fire risk is high as soon as the rain stops as there is considerable amount of dead grass in the pastures, and underbrush in timber is dry. Water quality of ponds and lakes that are not spring fed has gone down considerably. The more moderate "normal" temps have helped but livestock still struggling. My cattle are behind on their weight gain by average of 60 lbs now. Will not be as heavy as desired when it is time to sell them. Fruit is much smaller and the nut crop has had some premature drop. Bag worms have had a good time though. They do well in drought years. Outside land work and construction has continued without interruption. No road or building project should be behind, in fact they should be ahead of schedule...unless it is MoDot who can't seem to get anything done on time.
