Colorado leaders announced an adjustment in firefighting strategy and funds toward early detection and aggressive rapid response to extinguish fires before they can become larger wildfires. The state is better prepared for wildfires with the purchase of more aerial assets, including a $24 million helicopter and prepositioned air tankers that carry water and fire-extinguishing slurry. Local, state and federal agencies will be working even more closely to enhance the state of readiness.
Colorado wildfires in 2020 scorched 667,000 acres and cost $285 million to fight.
