Drought led North Dakota farmers to purchase seed, but maybe just over half of the fertilizer and about two-thirds of chemicals like insecticides that they normally buy. Even businesses outside the agriculture sector were noticing the slowdown in sales, including insurance companies, car dealerships, implement dealers, and hardware stores. Many people think that this drought is the worst since 1988.
