Drought drastically reduced the number of mosquitoes found in Grand Forks Public Health Department's traps, averaging nine mosquitoes. The West Nile virus, however, thrives in culex tarsalis mosquitoes, a species that does well in hotter, drier conditions, so the virus is still a concern.
