The ski industry has invested millions of dollars in more efficient snowmaking systems, drawing water from nearby streams or reservoirs. Snowmaking in Colorado diverts about 1.5 billion gallons of water annually, and about 80% of that returns to the watershed as snowmelt in the spring. Resorts are also using more energy efficient snow guns.
