Heat and drought drove the flash drought that seared the state in July. Farm ponds evaporated, soil dried and baked, and vegetation went dormant or died, leaving ranchers short on forage. Cattle were sold. The heat depressed pollen production, leading to a lot of sterile corn. “As far as heat and drought go, it’s the worst summer since 2011 and 2012,” said State Climatologist Gary McManus with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. “Overall, when it goes so long without rain and it’s so hot, it just beats you down.” Oklahoma City Journal Record (Okla.), Aug 23, 2022
