Stage 1 water restrictions remained in effect in Wichita. The level of Cheney Reservoir continued to fall, and the City of Wichita would like everyone to curb their water use by 10%. KWCH 12 (Wichita, Kan.), July 29, 2024 Cheney Reservoir, Wichita's main water source, has fallen to its lowest since 2013 as drought persisted. KWCH 12 (Wichita, Kan.), July 10, 2024 Wichita uses recycled water to irrigate its newly planted trees, has planted drought-resistant grasses and has turned off city-owned decorative fountains. Wichita’s drought stage is determined by the 12-month average water level at Cheney Lake Reservoir, which is 71.3% as reported on June 13, 2024. Once the 12-month average water level is in the range of 50% to 69% of the conservation pool, Stage 2 water restrictions will begin. KWCH 12 (Wichita, Kan.), June 13, 2024 Wichita remained in stage 1 of their drought response plan since January 2023. The trigger for stage 2 has not yet been reached. KAKE (Wichita, Kan.), July 26, 2023 Wichita entered Stage 1 of its drought response plan on Jan. 10. During Stage 1, the city manager urges residents to voluntarily conserve water; the city offers incentives or rebates that encourage water conservation; and the city tries to conserve water in its operations. Cheney Reservoir’s conservation pool was 80% full. Wichita’s drought response actions are based on the 12-month moving average of the conservation pool, which was 89%.
