Wichita will receive $6 million from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for construction activities to recharge the Equus Beds Aquifer, one of the city’s primary water sources. Its level has fallen over the years, raising concern about Wichita’s water supply. In response, the city developed the Equus Beds Aquifer Storage and Recovery project to artificially recharge the aquifer by diverting water from the Little Arkansas River when it is running high, treating the water and injecting it into the aquifer.
Wichita remained in Stage 1 of its drought response plan and asks for voluntary water conservation.
