Drought conditions have improved in most East Texas counties. Panola County reported ponds and lakes were still dangerously low. Due to recent temperatures, warm-season grasses have gone dormant. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair. Subsoil conditions were adequate to short and topsoil conditions were adequate. Winter pastures continued to grow in many areas, providing much-needed forages for livestock. Hay supply remained low for many producers. Livestock were doing fair to good with supplementation.

Most of East Texas received rainfall. Ponds and creeks began to fill up. Some winter pastures were growing. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair to good. Subsoil conditions were adequate to short. Topsoil conditions were adequate. Livestock was doing fair to good with some supplementation taking place. Wild pig damage was reported in hay meadows and pastures. Gopher control was underway.

Recent rainfall improved conditions across East Texas. Polk County reported that Lake Livingston was still very low and some boat ramps and docks were closed. Marion County reported receiving as much as 3.5 inches of rainfall. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor to good. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate. Livestock were in fair to good condition, with supplementation taking place. Hay shortage continued to be a primary concern for producers. Armyworms continued to be a problem.

Although conditions in East Texas had improved, the drought continued. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair to good. Subsoil conditions were adequate to short overall, while topsoil conditions were adequate. Producers were getting another cutting of hay when possible. Others were planting winter pastures to try and offset low hay supplies. Shortages remained a significant concern going into the cooler seasons. Livestock were in fair to good condition, with some supplementation taking place. Producers noticed larger populations of armyworms.
AgriLife Today (College Station, Texas), Oct 17, 2023
Recent rainfall helped parts of East Texas bounce back. Ponds and creeks rose to more normal levels. Some counties were able to lift their burn bans as well. Pasture and rangeland conditions were still very poor to fair. Topsoil conditions were short to adequate, and subsoil conditions were short. Producers in some areas, like Anderson and Panola counties, reported another cutting of hay, and producers in other counties remained hopeful for a final cutting. But recent forage growth also brought the problem of widespread armyworm infestations. Livestock were doing fair to good with some supplemental feeding taking place.
