Aerial waterfowl survey data show duck abundance in the southeastern U.S. is well below average, according to a Mississippi State University Extension Service instructor specializing in waterfowl and wetlands ecology. Drought along the flyway has left some stopover areas drier than normal with some wetlands going completely dry. Mississippi State University Extension (Starkville, Miss.), Jan 22, 2024 The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s December aerial waterfowl survey found modern-day low numbers of mallards and total ducks, due to the lack of rain. Waterfowl reports from Mississippi, which was down 68%, and Louisiana state agencies reflect significant drops in December waterfowl counts from their long-term averages, due to drought.
