2024 is shaping up to be one of the lowest power production years for Glen Canyon Dam as production has fallen by 17% on average from 2000 to 2023, compared with pre-drought years from 1988 to 1999, according to the Bureau of Reclamation. Diminished power production makes electric utilities more dependent on the energy market, has made some rely on fossil fuel energy sources, and caused electric rates to rise by 7%. Hydropower generation is estimated to be about 2.98 million megawatt-hours for the year.
