A prolonged lack of rain, an extremely dry winter, and Santa Ana winds combined to unleash wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The conflagrations affected parts of the Hollywood Hills, Pasadena, Altadena, Sylmar, and other areas. At least 10 deaths have been reported, and more than 9,000 structures were destroyed.
