Saltwater intrusion in the Delaware River was threatening water quality for the roughly 14.2 million people in the basin. During periods of low rainfall, seawater can push further up the river than usual and reach local water intakes. Reservoir storage was being used to compensate for the lack of fresh rainwater and keep saltwater from traveling too far upstream.
