Steams were running dry, trees were shedding their leaves early, burn bans were in effect, and farmers were working to care for their livestock. In Lyme, New Hampshire, cattle were consuming the first cutting of hay as the pastures were reduced to crunchy grass. The cattle would not normally get hay until much later in fall, and the farmer was hoping to get one more hay cutting. During an average year, enough hay is harvested to keep the cattle fed through winter without buying any hay, but this year, the hay purchases have already begun with three round bales at $75 each.
