Persistent drought has reduced Arizona quail populations, state wildlife officials say, and could necessitate shorter hunting seasons and smaller bag limits on the game birds.
The state’s small game manager urged the Arizona Game and Fish Commission to restrict the upcoming fall and winter season to protect sufficient breeding quail or “broodstock,” but commissioners voted 3-2 at their Sept. 5 meeting to stay with existing regulations. The topic will be revisited next spring before the 2026-2027 season.
A common observation in Arizona has been fewer quail chicks on the ground this year.
