A fire broke out near Houghton Lake on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 5. The next day the blaze had charred nearly 85 acres and continued to burn in a marshy area of mixed pine and hardwood forest as dry fuels and gusty winds made firefighting more challenging.
Burn permits were suspended on Friday, Oct. 3 to reduce the likelihood of accidental ignitions.
