Lake Champlain was at 93.07 feet on Thursday, Oct. 2, according to the National Weather Service. The communities of Willsboro and Essex were carefully monitoring their water as they draw from Lake Champlain. The low level of the lake caused emergency shutoffs at the Willsboro water treatment plant a couple of times in recent weeks, stated the Willsboro supervisor.
Essex was using a temporary water filtration plant while a new system was installed. The temporary intake was about 15 feet from the shoreline, and because the lake was very low, the surface water was dirtier than normal. Essex officials enacted a water ban because the temporary plant was struggling to meet demand.
