Aspen’s drought response committee recommended that the city remain in the stage 2 water shortage that took effect on Sept. 1. Considerably below average stream flows led the city to make the stage 2 water shortage declaration as the monsoon was lackluster and did not bring enough precipitation to ease the Western Slope’s drought. A stage 2 water shortage is intended to reduce system-wide water use by 10-15% and outdoor water use by 15-25%.
The Aspen City Council previously declared a Stage 1 water shortage on June 10 with the aim of cutting overall water consumption by 10% within city limits.
